How it works

Four phases and two scales that advance in parallel

TRL measures the technology and MRL its manufacturing. Phases can advance in parallel: progress in either raises the project’s maturity.

Phase 1

Concept

TRL 2–4 · MRL 1–3

You define what you want to solve and check that the idea holds up.

Phase 2

Detail

TRL 4–6 · MRL 3–5

Detailed design, prototype and validation in a representative environment.

Phase 3

Industrialization

TRL 6–8 · MRL 5–7

The product gets ready for manufacturing: process, suppliers and costs.

Production and launch, with compliance and documentation closed.

Where it is used

The methodology is followed inside a project: it needs the plan, the risks, the documents and the maturity to calculate the gates. You access it from the Project Management module, in Readiness Level.
